Item Details
Description
"The Hunters in the Rain," by Honore Daumier [1808-1879], second state (marked and signed in plate); original hand lithograph from PETIT JOURNAL POUR RIRE, October, 1864.The picture was examined with magnifying glass- it is a genuine hand lithograph printed from the lithographic limestone.[The black color reflects the pattern of the greasy crayon on slabs on limestone-- it looks like drawn with charcoal or black chalk] There are no dots related to mechanical printing. The COA will be included.

Original picture from the 1864' magazine with other lithographs on the backside. The lithograph is 9.3/4" x 6.3/8 [247mm x 161mm], some wear and a few wrinkles, two small edge repairs, two folds-one vertical, one horizontal [hardly visible], good++ condition.

Inscription-- "Ce n'est qu'un grain... il faut esperer que cela finira bientot. - Oui, mais voila deja deux heures que ca dure! [Two hunters have taken shelter under a tree in a rainstorm. One says, "It is only a sprinkle and it will stop soon." The other replies, "It surely will but it has already lasted two hours!"]

"LES JOLIS CHASSEURS, a series of 4 prints, which appeared in the JOURNAL AMUSANT as well as in the PETIT JOURNAL POUR RIRE in October 1864. This print has been produced following the system GILLOTAGE. HUNTING. Daumier's interest in hunting and fishing was a consequence of press censorship laws in 1835, which limited political engagement of caricaturists working for the free press. At the same time, in 1830 hunting legally ceased to be the prerogative of the aristocratic classes. Parisian bourgeoisie immediately took to the new fancy and engaged in hunting around the forests and countryside of Paris.

A new "fashion" was born and members of the Parisian middle class developed a hitherto unknown snobbism and passion for this sport. Deyeux even wrote a poem called "La Chassomanie". By 1860, some 155,000 hunting licenses had been issued, while one estimated that some 450,000 poachers were actively involved in hunting and fishing. While in the beginning of 1836 some 6,000 hunters were caught hunting without a license, this number increased substantially to 21,000 hunters fined for poaching in 1860" [the catalog note to Daumier's 'Hunting' series]
