Description
DESIGNER UNKNOWN STRADE FERACCE DELLA SICILIA. Circa 1900.
39¼x28¼ inches, 99½x71¾ cm.
Condition B+: expertly-repaired tears in margins, some into image; minor replaced losses and overpainting in margins; printed with metallic gold and silver inks.
An early, decorative poster for travel around Sicily via the Rete Sicula (the Sicilian Network), which operated from its formation in 1885 through 1905, when it was absorbed into the Italian State Railways. With its gilt ink and various vignettes of historical sites, contemporary cities and natural wonders around Sicily, the poster is a tour-de-force of printing. The small legend in the upper left corner explains that the intricate mosaic border is taken from the Palatine Chapel (Cappella Palatina) in Palermo. Rare.
