Description
European Provincial School
17th-18th Century
The Seven Swabians Attacking the Hare
Oil on canvas
16 1/8 x x 27 9/16 inches (41.4 x 70 cm)
Provenance:
Property of a Connecticut Estate
This painting illustrates an incident from "The Seven Swabians," a folk tale first recorded in 1563 and later catalogued by the Grimm brothers in 1857 as KHM119. The rambling strory relates a series of adventures undertaken by seven slow-witted men from Swabia who travel the world carrying a single great spear for self-protection. At one point they encounter a hare sleeping--upright and staring--in the sun. Convinced that the animal is a monster, they charge it with their spear, shouting as they go. The hare wakes up and runs away, once again revealing the foolishness of the seven adventurers.
