From about 246 B.C. gladiatorial games were a popular form of entertainment for Roman audiences. The gladiators were most often slaves or prisoners condemned to fight, which they did to the death using sword, spear or trident. The most famous gladiator of the period was Spartacus, a slave who led an unsuccessful rebellion against Rome. Emperor Honorius banned the brutal games in 404 A.D.
