Description
East Asia, China, late Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th century CE. A beautiful, hand-carved wooden cosmetic tray of an elegant form, all covered in layers of burgundy, brown, crimson, and goldenrod lacquer. The interior of the tray features 6 shallow, red-lacquered dishes meant to hold various forms of cosmetic material, and each is surrounded by intricate, low-relief motifs of vines and different fans. The squat legs supporting the main body are topped with stylized foo dog heads, and the peripheries are adorned with delicate scrollwork patterns. The form-fitting lid bears a quartet of stylized avian creatures in the corners, each flying towards the central, red-hued emblem. Size: 9.25" L x 13.25" W x 4.3" H (23.5 cm x 33.7 cm x 10.9 cm)

Condition
Repairs to some peripheral elements hanging between the legs, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Lid and body have a couple of stable hairline fissures, light abrasions, softening got some finer details, and chipping, with chips to rims of cosmetic dishes and some low-relief motifs. Great preservation to lacquer colors and most carved decorations. Old inventory label beneath bottom of main body.
