[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 4 items identified to CSA Private William V. Yates, 3rd Missouri Infantry, incl. war-date documents and tintype.

Three-quarters length studio portrait of soldier, presumably William V. Yates with a large revolver and corked bottle. 2 1/8 x 2 5/8 in. hand-colored tintype (light surface scratches, plate unevenly trimmed).

Manuscript transfer document including several signatures of commanding officers approving and forwarding assignments for Private Yates to join Captain Price in Mobile, Alabama. Head Quarters Missouri Brigade and Head Quarters, District of the Gulf, Mobile, 1-3 March 1865. 9 1/2 x 7 5/8 in. manuscript document (old folds, significant ink bleedthrough, toned). The 3rd and 5th Missouri Infantries were consolidated on 6 October 1864 and saw heavy action in the Atlanta Campaign and the Battle of Franklin. They were transferred to Mobile in early 1865 and it was there that they surrendered on 9 April 1865. It may be presumed that Yates was with the regiment at this time.

Certificate of Discharge. Camp near Springfield, [MO], 23 January 1862. 7 7/8 x 6 1/8 in. partly-printed document completed in manuscript (old folds with one section toned and soiled from greater exposure). The form discharges Private Yates from Company D, 1st Cavalry Regiment of Third Division, Army of Missouri due to "enlistment in the Confederate Service. Signed by his commanding officer E.T. Owens. Verso with additional information including his articles of clothing.

From Randolph County, MO, Yates enlisted on 1 August 1861 as a private and was the same day mustered into Co. K of the 3rd Missouri Infantry. He was wounded in the chest at Wilson's Creek, MO shortly after enlistment on 10 August 1861. His method and date of discharge is not known. After the war, he worked as a physician and died on 11 October 1930 in Sherwood, Oregon.
