"McCarty & Davis' Franklin Almanac, For The Year 1821, Being The first after Bissextile, Or Leap Year Carefully calculated for the Latitude and Meridian of Philadelphia", by John Ward, published by McCarty and Davis, Corner of Race and Ninth streets, Philadelphia.

Soft cover with wood-cut portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the front cover; 4.1/2" x 7"; 36 pages, some soiling and wear, a few edge creases [up to 1/4"]; a few small corner damages, slightly loose binding, fair/ good condition. See photos.

Contents: Movable Feasts; The Anatomy of Man's body, as said to be governed by the Twelve Constellations; Astronomical Symbols and Cycles; Solar and Lunar Eclipses in 1821; Rates of Postage; Monthly calendar with astronomical and other data.

The publishing company:

William McCarty and Thomas Davis acquiring the publishing and book retail business in 1815. The company was originally founded by Jacob Johnson in 1780, only selling children's books at first. In 1800, Johnson partnered with Benjamin Warner and the business was named Johnson & Warner. In 1815, the two sold the firm to William McCarty and Thomas Davis. The new owners of the firm would be wholesale book publishers of British dramas, the works of Shakespeare and many law books. McCarty eventually retired and Davis perished in 1850.
