Description

Richard Feynman Signed Personal Copy of General Zoology

Winterton C. Curtis and Mary Guthrie, Philip Mitchell. "Textbook of General Zoology". New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1933. Later printing. Signed in pencil by Richard Feynman on the front fly leaf as "R. P. FEYNMAN  PRINCETON 1941". HIs signature is located just above his Ex-Libris bookplate of both Arline and Richard P. Feynman to front fly leaf (with quote by Confucius "Learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous.") Feynman also included handwritten annotations and a small drawing in pencil in the margins of about 12 pages of the book. Publisher's navy blue cloth. The front paste down has a engraved image of a bookplate (but this is actually printed onto the paste down and is not an applied bookplate), the boards are lightly rubbed with fraying to the spine and corner tips. The binding is shaken but holding. Internally clean other than the handwritten annotations by Feynman. Intact tear to page 252. Very good. Ex-Sotheby's.

This copy is likely from the period Feynman was a graduate student at Princeton. While it is possible that students in the Physics graduate program at Princeton were required to take courses in biology, it is just as likely that Feynman purchased this book due to a love of genetics and zoology. Feynman's interest in biology remained with him, and years later, in 1968 he gave a series of lectures on a variety of topics at the Hughes Aircraft Company. The lectures given from October 1969 - May 1970 were on biology, organic chemistry, and microbiology.

Several examples of his reflective notations are shown below, and are included as images in this listing:

Page 250  "It is also able to bend and twist its body, when caught in tight places, so that it can take + maintain postures like.." (here Feynman draws two examples).

Page 136  "somatic/germ} 2 kinds of cell"

Page 252  "3 micronuclei disintegrate-the other divides"
