Description
A paper slip signed and inscribed by American writer Walt Whitman (1819-1892) as "Walt Whitman" and "Washington, D.C." N.d., but probably ca. 1862-1873. Expected paper folds and isolated loss to the left edge of the paper mount. The paper slip is laid down on a piece of blue-lined paper measuring 5.375" x 1.625," while the overall slab measures 9.5" x 4.5." Else very good to near fine, and auto graded Gem MT 10.
Walt Whitman lived in Washington, D.C. between 1862-1873. It was a formative time period for the writer, who composed an estimated 100 poems there, including "O Captain! My Captain!" in 1865. Whitman had traveled to the National's Capital in late 1862 to find his brother George, who had been wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg. Whitman volunteered at military hospitals during the remainder of the Civil War, while also juggling a series of part-time government clerkships.
