Alexander Solzhenitsyn Signed and Inscribed "The First Circle"
The First Circle (In Russian). Moscow: Book Chamber, 1990. First Edition in Russian. Signed, Inscribed and Dated by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in Cyrillic to the title page. Dated "8.9.95". Glossy paper boards with a portrait of Solzhenitsyn to the front. Near fine with one edge bump.
Based on Solzhenitsyn's own experiences as a prison laborer in a scientific research institute during the 1950's, this, his first novel concerns the life of a brilliant mathematician named Nerzhin forced into slave labor, narrating the heardships he and his fellow prisoners endure as cogs in the vast machine of Stalinist Russia. The First Circle was Solzhenitsyn's first novel; previously he had only published novellas, including the famed One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and An Incident at Krechetovka Station. The title is a reference to the first circle of hell in Dante's Inferno. The first edition was published in 1968 in English; this first edition in Russian was published in 1990.
