Joseph Wheeler ALS Following Retirement from Department of the Lakes
2pp of a bifolium, measuring 4.25" x 6.25", New York "The Waldorf Astoria", dated November 24, 1900. Signed "Joseph Wheeler" and addressed to Colonel Blackman. Wheeler thanks Blackman for his kind words, writing "I appreciate it more than words can express." Accompanied by the original letter. The letter has usual main folds, along with uneven toning throughout. Boldly signed. Accompanied by the original envelope.
Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) was a cavalry general in the Confederate Army and charged with the command of the 19th Alabama Infantry Regiment. After the war, Wheeler was elected to the House of Representatives for Alabama. During the Spanish-American War, at the age of 61, he was appointed by President McKinley to major general of volunteers. He also served in the Philippine-American War, serving as a brigadier general and commanding the Department of the Lakes. He finally retired in September 1900 and moved to New York.
