Lavinia Scholes Simpson was born in London, England, but emigrated to the United States, settling in New York. She was married to Wilson Simpson (1819-1880), and together they had four children: Lavinia (d. 1842), James (1850-1908), Florence (1855-1936), and Maria (1861-1927). She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
