Description
14th century AD. A sub-rectangular silver plaque with devotional content executed using repoussé technique; pellet borders framing a line of Arabic text above and a panel of three rectangular frames below, each with four bosses, geometric ornament and an image of a robed and nimbate Madonna and Child; mounted under glass in a wooden frame with card applied to the reverse bearing several lines of handwritten text in German. 323 grams, 23.3 x 17.5cm (9 1/4 x 7"). The RWM Collection; acquired Augsburg, Germany, 2019; formerly in the Arel G. Weber collection, 1981. The note on the reverse of the frame suggests that the icon may have been carried as a pilgrim's badge in 1986 as part of Aachener Heiligtumsfahrt, a pilgrimage which takes place every seven years in a tradition dating back to the age of Charlemagne (774-814 AD").
