Description
3rd-2nd century BC. A pair of gold earrings, each composed of an oval hoop, openwork chain and 'spherical' dangle comprising two hemispherical sheet-gold sleeves encasing a sub-spherical carnelian bead, the upper sheet ornamented with a band of applied gold scrolls. Cf. Despini, A., Greek Art Ancient Gold Jewellery, Greece, 1996, p.75, item 33 and p.79, for similar. 2.62 grams total, 41-44mm (1 1/2 - 1 3/4"). From a private family collection formed in London from the mid 1980s to early 1990s. [2]
