Description
52 caliber, 7-shot metallic cartridge repeating carbine invented and patented by Christopher M. Spencer. This weapon was the most successful repeating weapon of the Civil War. The US government contracted for over 95,000 Spencer carbines during the war with 65,000 made at Spencer’s Boston, MA factory and 30,000 of the weapons made at the Burnside Rifle Company in Rhode Island.Serial 50634. Overall length of 39”. Weight 8 lbs., 4 oz. Lockplate was casehardened but now exhibits a smooth, pleasing, chocolate-plum colored patina overall. In excellent, strong condition, this carbine has the correct 22” long barrel fitted to its two piece walnut buttstock / fore-end. Barrel has its original front sight, and a fixed V notch rear sight that was added by the man still using the gun after the war. If you wished to install an original rear sight originals are generally available for $150 to $200 at the antique arms shows. This sight has been on this gun since its period of use and likely saw service shooting at Indians or buffalo or deer in the 1860s and 1870s. The bore is the original 7 groove rifling and is in excellent condition. Both cartouches are clearly visible on the left side of the butt stock. Letters AH are incised into the upper corner of the butt stock on the right side.
Unique to this type weapon is its tubular magazine fitted into the butt for storing and feeding the rimfire metallic cartridges to the receiver. Magazine held seven cartridges and as the operating lever was worked, the magazine would feed the cartridge forward into the breech. Top flat of the receiver, forward of the hammer, is strongly stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT’S MARCH 6, 1860” in three lines. Serial # is located at the rear of the breech near the hammer.Carbine sling bar and sling ring are tightly attached to the left side of stock. Screws are in good condition, not buggered up. All metal surfaces are smooth steel gray. . Carbine exhibits crisp, strong mechanics. An original, Civil War Model 1860 Spencer carbine in very good overall condition.
