Purchased by the McNay Art Museum from the William Weston Gallery (London, UK) in 1987 on the instruction of Mr. Tobin.

Pierre Bonnard was born in Fortenay-aux-Roses in France in 1867. Bonnard studied at Ecole de Beaux Arts and the Academie Julian in 1888. Much of Bonnard's work was evident by his decorative flair, Art Nouveau styles, harmonious interpretations of the Parisian scene, Mediterranean landscapes and in the later years of his career, his attention to structural strength. His last painting, 'Almond Tree in Flower' was completed from his death bed a week before passing in February of 1947.
