Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A charming and very rare example of a hand-built redware pottery vessel in the form of a recumbent emaciated dog. Highly burnished and presented in hues of burnt sienna and citrine, the canine lays with its head turned towards its left side and held aloft above both forelegs. The slender body bears deep incisions to emphasize the vertical ribs extending from its protruding spine, and a perky tail rises up above a concave anus and delineated genitalia. The head exhibits slit-form eyes in front of perky ears, a crested snout above incised whiskers, and an open mouth that reveals sharp fangs and a petite tongue. A slanted spout extends from one side of the face, perhaps suggesting a facial tumor or another deformity. Size: 8.5" L x 5.875" W x 4" H (21.6 cm x 14.9 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private San Diego County, California, USA collection, purchased in the 1970s; ex David Stuart Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA
