[U.S. PRESIDENTS]. ROOSEVELT, Franklin Delano (1882-1945). Signed appointment letter on White House letterhead to Mayor John J. Murphy of Somerville, MA. Washington, D.C.: The White House, November 9, 1933. Folio sheet (356 x 229 mm) folded in half on official White House letterhead. Horizontal fold at center. Soiling at edges. President Roosevelt writes, “I have your letter of October twenty-fourth, in which you suggest it would be more agreeable to you to take over the office of United States Marshal for the District of Massachusetts on or about January 1, 1934, rather than on the date of expiration or the present Marshal’s term. I suggest that you take the oath of office on December thirty-first, and enter upon the performance of your duties the following day.” Original envelope included with Murphy’s notations and signature.
