Item Details
Description
In a word... spectacular! From northern Peru, Moche II phase ca 300 AD. Realistic pottery portrait vessel of a village elder, he sits legs crossed wearing a two-toned tunic and headdress decorated with bird head at front. What makes this vessel incredibly rare is the degree of scarification on his face. This was done ceremonially akin to tattoos of today. Additionally, unlike most later Moche vessels, the bottom of the vessel is fully finished, showing all lower details. 6"H.

Provenance: Ex-private Toronto, Ontario Collection.
