Description
A rare and important antique French double spout gargoulette in caramel glaze, made between 1850-1880. This piece is a bit of a mystery to collectors. It has many significant features with all having different meaning, including coveted braided handles, which were only added by special request. There is design in relief of different types of birds which is used on a marriage gift as a sign of fertility; and the big mystery, sitting atop the gargoulette, is an anthropomorphic design of a man playing a saxophone, que se passe? The saxophone was created during the 1840's in Belgium and this very well could be an homage to its invention. Provenance: Val de Saone, France. Dimensions: H 8" x Dia. 6" Condition: Showing moderate wear including chips and losses to spouts, small nicks and glaze losses throughout.
