Description
The Aerospace Primus Club was started in August 1960 by General Bernard Schriever with only thirteen charter members. Membership was limited to Air Force personnel who accomplished a feat bigger, better, or higher than anyone else. At the time this award was given to White, he was only one of four astronauts to attain the honor, the others being Gus Grissom, Gordon Cooper, and White's Gemini 4 crewmate, Jim McDivitt. In 1967, after Grissom and White perished in the Apollo 1 fire and another club member died, an article about the club was published in the Daytona Beach Morning Journal (photocopy included) discussing the deaths of the three and how that was the only method of resigning from the club. Our research turned up another article in a Pennsylvania paper from 1970 (photocopy also included) discussing the exclusivity of the club and how none of the moonwalkers had been chosen for the honor at that point.
