A French patinated bronze model of the Crouching Venus
19th century
After the Antique, on a rouge griotte marble plinth.
height 17 3/4in (45cm); width 12in (30.5cm); depth 8in (20cm)
Footnote:
The Crouching Venus is a Hellenistic model of Venus surprised at her bath. An evidently popular subject, quite a few copies in bronze and marble have been excavated on Roman sites in Italy and France. Versions of the model are in the Medici Collection at the Uffizi Gallery, the Farnese Collection of marbles at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples and another once belonging to the painter Sir Peter Lely, which is now in the British Royal Collection, is on loan to the British Museum.

Condition
With an overall dark brown patina to surface. General marks, scratches, rubbing and loss of patina at high points, notably to hair. Scattered minor chips and fleabites to marble.
