East Asia, Japan, late Edo period, ca. late 18th to early 19th century. An elegant brass brazier, also known as a hibachi, made by the metalsmith Murata Seimin (1761-1837). This piece was cast using the lost wax method and displays auspicious Buddhist creatures, a qilin (kirin) and phoenix, which Seimin was renowned for. The bottom has four legs and at the center of the base is a raised 9-character maker mark within a square that includes the artist's name. The vessel has a textured surface that is made up of repeated linear motifs. The barrel-shaped body has two large handles that connect to the midsection and project just above the rim. Two rectangular panels that contain the qilin and phoenix in low relief on either side. The overhangs the vessel's exterior and features an openwork geometric motif. The interior is deep and shows nice signs of use as a hibachi, which held coals for heating. This is a simply gorgeous example of a utilitarian vessel! Qilin are believed to appear upon the passing or arrival of a revered leader, interpreted as a good omen of peace and prosperity. Though appearing beast-like, these eccentric hybrids are said to refuse to walk upon grass for fear of harming a single blade, and thus are frequently depicted walking upon water or clouds. While generally gentle, they are known to sniff out and punish the wicked and impure.

Attached to modern wooded stand with opening at the center, so the maker mark is visible. Maker mark is very clear and legible. Some minor indentations and surface abrasions. Nice signs of use on interior and patina. Motifs are clear and excellent.
