East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. A finely cast leaded-bronze mirror with a polished face and a petite, knobbed handle surrounded by an avian motif on the other side. The verso of the mirror is decorated with dotted relief nodules and two cranes with flared wings flanking the handle. Below is a petite songbird perched on leafy branch, holding a grape bunch in its mouth. Above the handle is a linear marking of four stacked lines and scrolling motif. Polished and decorated bronze mirrors were popular luxury items coveted throughout East Asia, and this is a beautiful example! Size: 3.35" Diameter (8.5 cm)
