TOSH MATSUMOTO (1920-2010)Alley with carriages. Silver print, the image measuring 9½x6 inches (24.1x16.2 cm.), the mount 14x11 inches (35.6x27.9 cm.), with Tosh's signature, in pencil, on mount verso. Circa 1950
From the Personal Collection of Aron M. Mathieu (1907-1996), founder of Modern Photography> magazine.Tosh Matsumoto, born in the United States, was the only person of Asian descent to become a member of the New York Photo-League. Matsumoto’s work was included in the 1950 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art called In and Out of Focus and again at MoMA in 1953 in their exhibition, Diogenes with a Camera II. Following these exhibitions, Matsumoto withdrew from the artistic scene and was never known to exhibit his work again.
