Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $600**

Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A poignant tin retablo rendering of The Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa in Latin), hand painted and contained in a wooden frame with a crucifix at the top. She wears her traditional blue and white robe, pressing her hands together in a prayer as she contemplates Christ's crucifixion with a serene gaze, light seeming to radiate from her skin and robes. As is customary for Mater Dolorosa imagery, a sword pierces the Virgin Mary's heart, a reference to Luke 2:35: "And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, 'Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed - and a sword will pierce even your own soul - to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.'" This example is set in a custom, vintage frame that has a suspension cord on the verso. Size of retablo: 7.75" L x 5.75" W (19.7 cm x 14.6 cm); frame: 12.75" L x 7.25" W (32.4 cm x 18.4 cm)
