Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A poignant tin retablo rendering of The Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa in Latin), the most important compositions in which Mary is depicted without Christ. She is presented as the mourning mother, projecting a grieving attitude, wearing her traditional robes and veil over her head, pressing one hand to her heart and the other extended, as she contemplates Christ's crucifixion with a serene gaze. Radiating beams of light form a halo around her head and seem to radiate from her skin and robes. As is customary for Mater Dolorosa imagery, a sword pierces the Virgin Mary's heart, a reference to Luke 2:35: "And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, 'Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed - and a sword will pierce even your own soul - to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.'" Size: 7" L x 4.75" W (17.8 cm x 12.1 cm)
