Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Lampung, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A vibrant textile panel known as a tatibin, embroidered with cotton and metallic threads into an intricate geometric motif, perhaps to form a highly abstract scene of a boat. The canvas panel is rectangular and completely covered with embroidered threads in blue, red, yellow, green, and metallic silver and gold threads. The patterns consist of stepped and graduated bands with meanders and interlocking shapes. The silver and gold threads accentuate the polychrome hues and are sewn into square segments. All together the geometric forms come together as a ship. The tatibin is smaller version of the ceremonial palepai ship cloth. This is professionally mounted on a blue fabric and wood frame and is ready to be displayed! Size of textile 30.5" L x 17" W (77.5 cm x 43.2 cm); frame: 34" L x 22" W (86.4 cm x 55.9 cm)
