Description
Good quality example made for well-off owner, probably a Confederate officer as the wealth spread was much wider in the South. Commercially made to furniture standards and probably by a furniture manufacturer. 50" length. The frame is made of a single-piece saw cut down the middle and secured with an iron ring at the split. Baluster grip and largely shaped armrest made without covering as no nail holes are present. Used by soldiers whose legs were amputated from leg wounds. (Field amputation was the treatment for all limb wounds owing to the inability to fight infection.) Soldiers with leg amputations used their crutches for the rest of their lives. Rare variant.
