Description
Namau, Purai River Delta (south coast of Papua New Guinea) Early 20th century, from the famed Gunther Hintz Collection. 5 1/8" length, made from a shaped and polished coconut shell. The Namau numbered about 7000 individuals, were known to have been very warlike. Both head-hunting and ceremonial cannibalism formed important parts of traditional ritual culture which called for the taking of heads and ritual cannibalism in certain of its ceremonies, particularly in the initiation of youths.
