Description
Wooden segmented rice container with a circular opening, made of a fine grained wood and finished in a mahogany lacquer. The cover is decorated with a carving of a Qilin, a mythical creature that brings good luck. This was made for rich merchants of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, Southeast China.Wenzhou’s geographic location made it ideal as a trading port. It has always been an important center of commerce. In addition, it is known for its handicrafts. Rich merchants of Wenzhou would use beautiful objects for their homes. Dating would be first half, 20th century.
