Rare Egyptian Revival Oak Fireplace Surround

second half 19th century, the covered rectilinear top over an asp-, feather- and cabochon-carved center, raised on flare legs, each with incise-carved figures.

**In overall good condition. The surface appears to be an old or original finish that has been subsequently over-coated. Some grain is somewhat open. Ebonizing renewed. Normal minor mars, abrasions and shrinkage including filler at a lamination separation in the top. The top exhibits two round plugs, suggesting at some point it may have had a mirror attached. There are three angled screw holes along the back edge of the top where it was affixed to a wall. There is a piece of buckled, replaced veneer, about 1-3/4" x 3", at a seam where a leg meets the face.
