Description
For your consideration is a massive 12 1/4" Japanese Daishoji Imari bowl. This fantastic bowl is marked on its reverse in a Chinese style 6-character mark reading "kigyuoku houtei no chin" or "rare precious treasure" - a mark used in the Edo Period (1603-1867). This piece displays (4) underglaze blue medallions with each depicting a structure on a bridge surrounded by water. Outside of these medallions is a fantastically intricate all over red chrysanthemum petal decoration laced with parcel gilt details. Flittering above the chrysanthemum petals are butterflies in various forms with gilt and green and blue enamel details. The center medallion is lined with butterflies with outstretched wings and aligned side by side. Interior to these butterflies is a classic floral medallion more chrysanthemums, lotus and associated foliage. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with alternating butterflies and chrysanthemums between a scrolling vine and acanthus type borders. The underside of the bowl is marked with the 6-character, Chinese style "kigyuoku houtei no chin" mark. The bowl measures 12 1/4" in diameter and is 2 1/2" in height. The bowl weighs 3 pounds, 4 ounces.
