Wilson Alwyn Bentley (American/Vermont, 1865-1931). "Snowflake", photomicrograph. Dated verso, framed. Note: Bentley perfected a process of catching snowflakes on frozen black velvet covered boards and then capturing their images using a camera attached to a microscope. Reverend Henry Crocker, an amateur scientist himself, helped Bentley with his work and submitted articles on the micrographs to various scientific publications, increasing Bentley's notoriety in his own lifetime. Provenance: Private collection, Wilmington, NC; Collection of Rev. Henry Crocker, by descent to his great grand-daughter. Approx. 10.5" x 10.5" (frame), 5" x 5" (sheet)
