Description
Sir Godfrey Kneller (German/England, 1646-1723). "Portrait of Daniel Defoe", oil on canvas. Apparently unsigned; artist's plaque identifying sitter on giltwood frame. Note: The author of more than 300 works, Daniel Defoe (British, 1660-1731) is most famous for writing "Robinson Crusoe" in 1719. Kneller painted some of the most important figures of he day including many kings and Sir Isaac Newton. Approx. 61" x 52" (frame), 48.5" x 40" (canvas)
Condition
Old lining which is separating in two places at top. Examined under blacklight, surface covered in layer of green glowing masking varnish which was badly applied and is streaked. Amount of inpainting indeterminable due to inpainting.
