William Brownfield & Son(s) (English, 1850-1891), 1871-1891. 134 piece porcelain partial dinnerware service in two colors, green and turquoise, having a, foliate gothic arch - arabesque design to the rim with gilt accents comprising: eighteen turquoise dinner plates (dia.10"), eighteen turquoise luncheon plates (dia. 9"), fourteen turquoise appetizer/salad plates (dia. 7.75"), eighteen large green rim soup bowls/plates (dia. 9.25"), eleven small green rim soup bowls/plates (dia. 7.75"), ten turquoise sauce dishes or berry bowls (dia. 5.5"), six large turquoise saucers (dia. 6"), five medium turquoise saucers (dia. 5.5"), five medium green saucers (dia. 5.5"), three turquoise demitasse cups (h. 2.25"), nine turquoise demitasse saucers (dia. 4.5"), five green demitasse saucers (dia. 4.5"), one green sauce boat with separate underplate (overall h. 5.5"), one green soup tureen (h. 9.5", w. 13.5", d. 9.25"), one blue stand or underplate for soup tureen (w. 15.5?, d. 11.75?), one turquoise covered vegetable (h. 5.5", w. 12.5", d. 7.75"), one blue covered vegetable (h. 5.5", w. 12.5", d. 7.75"), one green covered vegetable lid (h. 3.75", w. 10". d. 6.5"), two green open vegetable bowls (h. 2", w. 10". d. 7.5"), one large green open footed bowl (h. 4.75?, dia. 10.5?), one green muffineer (h. 4.25?, dia 8.5?, and one turquoise platter (h. 1.75?, w. 19?, d. 15.25?). Most marked ?876?, various printed, painted and impressed marks including retail marks for Davis & Collamore & Co., New York. Note: After Brownfield & Sons ceased operations this design would be produced by Stonier & Co. Ltd., Liverpool, starting in 1891, as the "Crown" or "Miter" / "Mitre" pattern. The pattern would be adapted with the addition of the White Star line logo and used in their first-class dining rooms including that on the R.M.S. Titanic. It would also be used by other ocean liner companies of the era including the Red Star Line.
Condition
Various: one dinner plate faded; three appetizer/salad plate with stable cracks to rim, one with chip to foot; one large rim soup with losses; ten small rim soups with losses to decoration or stable cracks; eight sauce dishes with chips or stable cracks; two large saucers with stable cracks, one with flakes to decoration; one medium turquoise saucer with staining, one with loss of decoration; one medium green saucer with multiple stable cracks and chips; two demitasse cups with stable cracks; two green demitasse saucers with cracks and one with chip; repaired crack to handle of sauce boat; soup tureen with repaired handle, crack to interior of rim, and area with loss of decoration; both covered vegetables with loss of decoration, one with stable crack, the lid of the blue covered vegetable associated and does not fit correctly; both open vegetables with change in color from use/age and with loss of decoration; repaired crack to muffineer with are of staining to base; platter with losses of decoration; all pieces with varying degrees of utensil marks, loss of gilding, and some wear to decoration.
