Description
JAPANESE ONE OF THE "ONE MILLION PAGODAS" (HYAKUMANTO) WOODEN MINIATURE PAGODA, the top spire as cover, concealing a small block-printed roll of a darani invocation scroll within the hollowed compartment at center, remnants of white pigmentation. Scroll mounted on canvas. Presented in a custom wooden case. From the one million pagodas commissioned by Empress Shotoku (718-770). Circa 764-770. 8" HOA with scroll in place.
Provenance: From the Joseph and June Hennage collection, to benefit the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
Catalogue Note: This is example is one of three thousand that were given away in 1908 to those contributing to an appeal for funds to restore the temple in Nara. Other examples reside in major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 1975.268.150a,b.
