Description
AMERICAN ROOKWOOD HAND-PAINTED HOLLY MOTIF CERAMIC EWER, having squat bulbous base with elongated graceful neck and trefoil rim, featuring holly leaves and berries on mottled hunter green and yellow ground, incised initials for Josephine E. Zettel (1874-1954), to underside. Additional marks to underside include impressed R-P mark with seven flame points, "611 D", and "W". Together with a standard glaze elongated ovoid form vase featuring the profile of a grinning monk wearing a skull cap with robe, signed "AU", impressed "UTOPIAN", "J.E. OWENS", and "0901" to underside. Rookwood Pottery, Cincinnati, OH. Late 19th/early 20th century. 8 1/2" H and 10 3/4" H.

Ewer undamaged; Owens example with moderate glaze crazing, some almost exfoliating.
