Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A petite drug spoon, hand-carved from a mottled red stone with white inclusions - known as brecciated jasper - with a spiralized body similar in form to the shell of a spire mollusk. The spoon has a carved-out scoop with a pair of perforated suspension holes, a tab-shaped finger rest, and a twisting conical handle. This spoon would have been used for measuring and grinding lime powder to combine with coca leaves to permit the narcotic substance access to the bloodstream. A finely preserved example! Size: 4.75" L x 1.35" W (12.1 cm x 3.4 cm)
