Southeast Asia, Cambodia, ca. early 20th century CE. A quartet of absolutely charming nickel-brass containers for holding betel nuts, each in the shape of an animal: two crouching rabbits, each with a chubby body and delicate ears; a pug-like dog with an endearing squashed nose; and a deer, portrayed laying down with its head turned to one side and its antlers and ears beautifully depicted. Each has repousse details on its body, creating fur and other decorations. Each opens at its center, with the upper part forming a lid that fits tightly around the slightly indented top of the lower part. Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.
