Description
Neoclassical rug; Royal Tapestry Factory style, Spain, ca 1940-1950.Hand-woven in wool.In perfect state of preservation.Measurements: 440 x 350 cm.Hand-woven woollen rug, which presents a yellow ochre field on which a neoclassical-inspired design is arranged. A rosette, inscribed in a medallion in the form of a vegetal garland, dominates the centre. This is surrounded by a chain of vegetal and geometric motifs inherited from classicist aesthetics. Finally, the field is delimited by the border, with a blue-and-white fretwork motif and areas reserved for the corners with floral motifs inside. The border has three bands, two thinner and simpler decorative bands on the sides and a central band decorated with a rhythmic aesthetic, whose motifs seem to represent the triglyphs of classical columns. The work is similar in style to the carpets created at the Royal Tapestry Factory, both in design and manufacture. This type of neoclassical aesthetic applied to the designs of the Factory's carpets was linked to the exactions of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the aesthetic findings of which were exported by Charles III to the Spanish royal manufactories.
