This is an excellent full-size large fully top beaded soft cradleboard papoose collected from the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation from Lame Deer, Montana in the late 1900’s. The piece is done in the old traditional geometric Cheyenne beadwork patterns all done in glass trade seed beads with a chalk white background and symbols in colors of cobalt, corn yellow, red, and medium to light blue. The top has a hard inner lining, likely an Indian tanned hide which is covered on both sides with a light blue calico trade clothe and the beadwork showing a hide square beaded adornment which is further accented with four beaded fringes holding metal trade bells with dyes of red and blue. The entire back, sides and bottom consist of a calico trade clothe quilt blanket with floral inner lining and two hide ties. The piece is in good overall condition with little to no bead loss. Provenance: Found to be an authentic original by an expert in Billings, Montana and from an astounding collection of American Indian beadwork and artifacts from Sheridan, Montana. Measures 49”L and the beaded area is approximately 13.5” from the front edge to back of the beaded accent by 29” around the top edge of the beadwork.
