Description
Archive of nineteen (19) Civil War era documents, including letters from Confederate and Union soldiers, one from Fort Donelson, plus Parole and Oath documents. 1st-3rd items: Three (3) ALS from Confederate and Union soldiers, including one (1) written by Captain J. A. Anthony, 7th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers, addressed to his mother, Mrs. E. A. Crenshaw, Hartsville, TN, dated October 18, 1861, containing descriptions of the Battle of Carnifex Ferry, September 10, 1861; one (1) written by Prisoner of War Lieutenant W. P. Anthony, 30th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers, from Camp Chase, OH, addressed to Mr. H. B. Vaughan, Gallatin, TN, dated March 18, 1862, containing assurances that he is well but needs money, includes an envelope; and one (1) from John O. Sherwin, 83rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry, from Fort Donelson, TN, addressed to his wife Mrs. P. O. Sherwin, Illinois, dated March 1, 1863, containing descriptions of the weather and addressing personal concerns she raised in her last letter, includes envelope. 4th-5th items: Two (2) documents pertaining to Confederate soldier T. L. Ritter, Private, 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Company F, including one (1) handwritten parole document issued by the Headquarters of the U.S. Forces, Smithsville, MS, dated June 17, 1865 and one (1) partially typed document oath document in which Ritter swears to "...protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the union of the States thereunder..." signed by Ritter and dated July 21, 1865. Both housed under glass in matching black wooden frame with gilt trim. Frames: 11" H x 9" W. 6th-15th items: Ten (10) Confederate and Union military order documents, including two (2) pertaining to a furlough request for Samuel A. Wilburn, Private, 15th Regiment, Kentucky Calvary Volunteers, from the Headquarters District of Columbus, 6th Divison, 16th Army Corps, both dated June 16, 1863. 16th-17th items: Three (3) circular documents printed by the Office General Superintendent of Freedmen, Department Tennessee and State of Arkansas, dated circa March 19-October 17, 1864, pertaining to the treatment of Freedmen, particularly in reference to requiring freedmen to labor on plantations. 18th-19th items: Two (2) Mississippi receipts, including one (1) from Vicksburg, dated January 31, 1861 and one (1) from Natchez, dated June 1865. All unframed items housed in a three ring binder.
Condition
All items in overall good condition with toning and foxing spots, to be expected from age and manner of use. Framed items not examined outside of frames.
