Description
A pair of Late Roman/Byzantine hinged bronze seals, c. 5th - 6th Century AD, originally each possessed a second half that was hinged together. Often referred a 'clamshell' stamp seal, one bears a peacock with tail swept upward, (14 x 14.5 mm), the second with a hare prancing to left, (14 x 13 mm). Interesting types of stamp seals which seem to mainly originate from central to eastern Europe and date to a narrow time period, much like Roman seal boxes. Ex collection of Peter Cheremisinoff, NJ.
