Description
"The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" Edited by Frank Woodworth Pine published by Garden City Publishing, New York, copyright by Henry Holt, 1916; illustrated.
Hard boards, original publisher's green cloth stamped in black [a little wear]; 5.1/2" x 8.1/2"; vintage book dealer label inside cover, inscription on the front endpaper dated 'August 21st, 1928', some staining of frontispiece and title page [see photos]; 20-page Introduction by the editor + 206 pages, several illustrations and decorations, very good condition.
"The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography is both an important historical document and Franklin's major literary work. The Autobiography is a major source for exploring Franklin's ideas on wealth and virtue as well as his motivations in pursuing a long life of active civic participation.
Franklin wrote his autobiography in the form of an extended letter to his son. While recording the events of his life, he adds instructions for good living which makes this work America's first "How to Succeed" book. Edited by Frank Woodworth Pine (1869-1919).
