Willem Roelofs
Netherlands, Holland,1822-1897
Depicts a large white house with red roof behind a picket fence and dirt road with a goat wandering by. Roelofs was a forerunner of the Hague school studying at the Academy for Visual Arts under H. van Sande-Bakhuyzen. Roelofs helped to establish the Hague Pulchri Studio and helped form a link between French Barbizon and the Hague. He was one of the co-founders of the Société Belge des Aquarellistes and was held in high esteem by the Belgian royal family. Not only was he well established, it was Roelofs who encouraged Vincent Van Gogh to attend the Royal Academy of Art.
