Swiss Scene
Signed and dated "F.C. Frieseke/1931" in pencil l.r., titled and dated "2 1931 Swiss Scene oil?" in pencil on the reverse.
Oil on paper, 9 3/8 x 12 3/8 in. (23.7 x 31.6 cm), unmatted, unframed.
Condition: Toning, staining and foxing to the edges of the sheet, remnants of a former mounting to each corner of the reverse, irregular top edge as if torn from a sketchbook.
Provenance: By descent in the family of the artist.
N.B. Frieseke and his family spent time in Switzerland between 1930 and 1932 with hopes that the fresh Swiss air would alleviate the pre-tuberculosis symptoms of his daughter, Frances. While there, he painted a series of winter scenes that were exhibited at Macbeth Gallery in New York in 1932.
