Description
Frederick Carl Frieseke (American, 1874-1939)
Frances in Studio Doorway
Inscribed and dated "for Sadie, a portrait of her Nana/by her Great Grandaddy/F.C. Frieseke 1922" on the reverse, titled in an inscription on the frame backing.
Oil on panel, 13 3/4 x 10 1/2 in. (35.0 x 27.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Hole with small loss l.c., scattered minor abrasions to corners and edges, scattered small areas of retouch, varnish inconsistencies.
Provenance: By descent in the family of the artist.
N.B. Following the birth of his daughter, Frances, in 1914, Frederick Carl Frieseke increasingly focused his attention on intimate portraits and domestic scenes featuring Frances and his wife, Sarah O'Bryan Frieseke, known as Sadie. By the time Frieseke painted this charming depiction of Frances in 1922, the family's summer residence had moved from Giverny to Normandy. This painting demonstrates the two hallmarks of Frieseke's later work: domestic interiors and figures in sun-filled outdoor settings. Here he combines the two genres by capturing Frances as she perches on the threshold of an open door, with the interior structures securing her in the house while the bright, cheerful orchard unfolds behind her. A master of pattern and color, clothing always provided Frieseke with the opportunity to display his virtuosity as it did here in Frances's blue dress.
