Description
Pietro Domenico Olivero (Turin, 1679 - Turin, 1755) ext. 25,1x43,3 in., int. 20x38,1 in. This canvas by Oliviero is an excellent counterpart to the genre of the bambocciata: on the one hand, we have a more cheerful, light-hearted depiction of a meeting between peasants near a tavern; whereas here the undisputed protagonist is the chaotic whirling of a large number of people in a harsher, wilder landscape, dotted with ancient ruins and a broad view. The landscape is rendered with extensive backgrounds, making it deep but not imprecise. The same 'patches' of colour build up the figures crowding the scene: in this miniature 'atlas of people', none of the characters are identical. Each one performs a different action and directs the viewer’s attention to another point in the scene; the observer does not feel that they are the protagonist of the representation here; they are not involved; they are just guests in the flow of events.
