Description
A LOUIS XVI PROVINCIAL GILT AND PAINTED WOOD BAROMETER/THERMOMETER, 1775, of pendulum form with a laurel wreath and turban crest suspending leafy pendants, flanking a green painted vertical rectangular panel with double beaded rod trim ending as fringe tassels and centering a conforming glass-covered thermometer with illegibly inscribed white painted temperature gauge, over a circular glass-covered and raised molding framed barometer with white painted dial enclosing brown inscriptions dated 1775, beneath rippling arrow and crescent moon cut steel hands with an adjustable long spear pointer, above a tapering rectangular base with palm leaf carving issuing from a fluted frieze and ending as a fruiting finial. Height: 43 1/2" Width: 12 1/2" Depth: 2 1/2"
Condition
Good antique condition with expected old repairs, touch-ups, small gesso losses, worn gilding, flaking paint, surface buildup throughout, age shrinkage cracks, normal small edge chips, dings, and both thermometer/barometer gauge panels are worn, faded, and have surface dust buildup. The reverse glass tubes appear to be original but contain no mercury. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
